ARSC Days 4 and 5

More sessions, more learning. My favorite presentations of the day were the updates on copyright activism, and Chris Lacinak's (from Audio Visual Preservation Solutions) presentation on BWF MetaEdit, a new software program for editing embedded metadata! I can't wait to try it! CUA has needed something like this--a way to access all of the embedded metadata chunks in one program and a way of batch-importing the metadata from existing Excel sheets. This could be a workable solution for importing metadata!

ARSC Days 2 and 3

So, I've caught up with last year's ARSC friends, met some amazing new people, and have seen quite a few more sites of the city.

Yesterday, I ventured out with a friend for beingets and cafe au lait, a museum tour, and then ventured to find the St. Roch cemetery that was named for St. Roch's healing powers and known for the braces and canes people left behind in the chapel. Last night also included the ARSC reception and meeting more new, wonderful people, going out, and asking for a drink in a "to go" cup just for the NOLA experience.

Today, after a full day of presentations, especially after learning so much from one from IU (I'm taking some of that massive survey knowledge back for my CUA projects!), another reception and museum tour, dinner at what was once a rich family's restaurant/estate, and then JAZZ at the Palm Court! Real NOLA JAZZ with more amazing, new people. Then we ventured to Frenchmen St, the scene of the best jazz clubs, and made plans for tomorrow night after browsing some of tonight's acts and the posters for tomorrow's. Delfeayo Marsalis is playing at Snug Harbor tomorrow night! One the way back we stopped and danced to a growing band of street musicians on a corner, and got more beignets at Cafe Du Monde. The air is full of music and energy, and smells like beignets and powdered sugar. Only in NOLA...

Have I mentioned how wonderful ARSC and NOLA are?

ARSC Day 1

I have no words for how amazing NOLA is, and how cool it is to be staying in a corner hotel room overlooking Bourbon Street! I went walking around for hours this evening with a friend checking out the scenes, the music, the places to eat (for this entire week), and taking a TON of photos. I captured the cool stuff with my camera, and the places I wanted to go this week with the camera on my Droid. Why Droid? Geo-tagging! The Droid has an option where you can view on a map where you took the photo, and then get directions (through Google Maps) to that location. I looked like such a tourist, but when the squeaking/sculpture/jester/character actor wants to pose with you, you just have to take a picture!

Photos to come... I may create a separate gallery, which will further utilize the capabilities of my new host!

This social a/v archivist is headed to New Orleans on Tuesday for the annual ARSC confernce! I really looking forward to learning about new uses of technology during the day and checking out a new jazz scene every night! I hope there's a new, amazing discovery like the earliest sound recording last year! I can't wait!
